CHS assistant principal dies in morning wreck

Pritchett broke the news and discussed efforts to meet anticipated counseling needs in a brief meeting with teachers and staff before the start of school. Teachers shared the news of the wreck with students at the start of first period. Social studies teacher and head basketball coach Jeff Cody taught with Findley and described her as a professional who was dedicated to CHS and the students she served."She was a true servant, and that's what made her special," Cody said. "She will be missed."Students also were also shaken by Findley's death. "I think there's a lot of shock," said Student Council President Will Snider. "Nobody expects something like this. She gave us so much support. She was always nice. I never heard a bad word spoken about her among the student body, which is pleasing, considering her role as an assistant principal, which is a tough position."She was always funny and extremely nice to every one of us.

Plaza cam is back

The Plaza cam is back.

Visitors to www.ArcataPlazaCam.com can now see live video of the northwest corner of the town square via a Web-enabled camera perched on the Plaza View Stay balcony at Ninth and H streets, according to a press release.

A separate web camera existed on the south side of the Plaza for several years, operated by a Web site design and hosting company.

Alex Stillman, an Arcata City Councilwoman, is sponsoring the new camera. It uses her private DSL for Internet access.

"I figure it's for fun," she said.

Stillman said she decided to put it up after her daughter in the Bay Area said she was checking on road and slope conditions via Web cams to decide whether to go skiing. That conversation reminded Stillman of the old Plaza cam.

The new camera will be great to view festivals and to see how busy the plaza is, Stillman said.

What do you think?

It is time for our state legislators to back off on the attack on the initiative process.http://www.chronline.com/storyviews.php?subaction=showfull&id=1201289066&archive=&start_from=&ucat=13&SEATTLE TIMES EDITORIAL BOARD, Thursday, January 24, 2008, Another attack on initiative rights: This sounds like it is protecting the public, but it is not. There is no great problem of fraudulent signatures. The Office of the Secretary of State checks signatures, and if the signatures are not valid, it doesn't count them. No measure has gotten onto the ballot by the use of phony names. Why make the citizen who signed the petition the one to lose his rights because of something the signature gatherer did years before? These bills are not aimed at making democracy better. They are aimed at infecting it with rigmarole and risk, and thereby restricting it, so that certain measures never reach the ballot.

WATER POLO

Water polo is now an established sport played throughout the world but it has a long history which began in England. The first documented evidence of the game was when the Bournemouth Premier Rowing Club carried out the "first series" of aquatic handball matches" on 13 July 1876.

Various ball games had been played in the water before this time, the most common seems to have been a type of polo in which the swimmer "rode" an inflated skin or barrel, propelling the ball with the hands or a form of paddle and moving about by using the feet. These games were probably more in the way of "comic relief" and the game played on "barrel horses" was still to be seen in the early years of the present century. This is probably where the name "Polo" came from.

Evidence suggests that the game was played in the 1870's in Leeds with a rugby ball and in Burton-on-Trent where a goal was scored by grounding the ball on the end of the bath, with the goalkeeper standing on the end and allowed to jump onto any player in possession of the soft india rubber ball.
