Trend Micro Sees Growth of Underground Cybercrime Economy

CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Trend Micro Incorporated TSE: 4704, a global leader in Internet content security, published today its 2007 Threat Report and 2008 Forecast.

According to research from Trend Micro's TrendLabs(SM), hackers are intensifying their attacks on legitimate Web sites. The number of compromised Web sites are slowly outnumbering malicious ones created specifically by cyber criminals. It debunks the adage to "not visit questionable sites" because even trusted Web sites such as those belonging to Fortune 500 companies, schools and government organizations can hold malware.

An underground malware industry has carved itself a thriving market by exploiting the trust and confidence of Web users. The Russian Business Network, for example, was notorious all year for hosting illegal businesses including child pornography, phishing and malware distribution sites.

Andy Oram Reports

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- It's an unlikely matter for the United States and other nations to lock horns over: the administration of names and numbers used to reach Internet sites.

'SOCIAL WEB' HAS FAR TO GO, BUT MUCH PROMISE Andy Oram

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two ideas, diametrically opposed in philosophy and approach, have seized the attention of Internet companies and technologists over the first few years of this century. Given that the century will be so long and we have barely started yet, it's hard to say which will turn out to be most important. One stresses classification, the other community. These two ideas are attracting both money and attention, but neither has yet borne fruit.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Resigned editorial page editor Andres Martinez says the paper's newly-arrived editor and publisher

caved to a disgruntled newsroom that is annoyed at [the paper's owners in] Chicago, annoyed at them and annoyed at the autonomy of the opinion pages.

The newsroom unrest, Martinez says, is partly "ideological" (the news pages presumably being more conventionally liberal than his editorial page), partly "a matter of bureaucratic culture," and

some of it a personnel matter (there are some embittered former editorial board members that Kinsley and Carroll sent off to the newsroom).

Liberia: President Johnson-Sirleaf Evades TRC

Victims and perpetrators have gorged out their experiences, but those who commanded the forces of rebellion and bear the greater responsibilities are yet to dignify the Commission by appearing and testifying.

Although President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has reiterated her support for the TRC process, comments made by her Tuesady morning during her regular "Talk with the President's radio program, indicate that she is not prepared to submit to the TRC process and tell her people what she knows about the war and the period dating to 1979.

She says she does not want to make the TRC a spectacle. The Analyst looks at the President utterances and their implications.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf gave a shortcut response to a question as to whether or not she would appear before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and tell the Liberian people and the world what she knows about the 14-year war and the events before it dating to 1979.
