Unseen writings show anti-racist passions of young Arthur Miller

Professor Bigsby, whose latest novel, One Hundred Days: One Hundred Nights, was published last week, does not believe that the author would have objected to the short stories being published. However, he said: "The novel where he was working through his own life and his first marriage, and where the characters are extremely recognisable, he wouldn’t have put that out there."

News of the discovery came as Miller’s first play on Broadway, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened at the Donmar Warehouse in London.

Life imitates art

— Miller’s father, Isidore, a shopkeer and manufacturer of women’s wear, lost all his money in the stock market crash of 1929

— Miller relied on odd jobs to pay for his studies, including being a radio singer, truck driver and warehouse clerk

— Miller had to tour army camps to get ideas for his screenplay for The Story of GI Joe (1945) — he had avoided being drafted because of a football injury

S.F. park to host massive music festival

The inaugural Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival will launch with all the subtlety of a rocket ship. With a lineup that includes headliners Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson, this three-day festival has the potential to be one of the biggest concerts in Bay Area history.

The event is set for Aug. 22-24 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Radiohead will headline the first night, with Petty and Johnson batting cleanup on, respectively, Aug. 23 and 24. Those are the only three names that have yet been announced. The festival is being put together, in part, by the same folks that present the mammoth Bonnaroo Festival each summer in Tennessee.

The event, perhaps the most ambitious in the park's rich history of hosting concerts, will feature five performance stages and the programming will represent a wide range of styles, from rock and blues to hip-hop and reggae to soul and jazz.

Clinton campaign starts 5-point attack on Obama

Surely a man of any integrity would not participate in such a spectacle. Obama is either out-of-the-loop, shallower than we dare imagine, or far sinister than he lets on. Is this our concern? No. Our concern as voters, is our vote. With our vote lies our own responsibility towards this nation, and its citizens.

Microsoft in a twist over SaaSy Office deal

A UK hosting company is offering Microsoft Office for £4.99 (around $10) a month with no contract commitment, and Microsoft doesn't like it — even though it seems Microsoft approved the arrangement.

Launched last week by popular web hosting provider Fasthosts, the service uses streaming technology to download the application to the customer's PC, where it runs for as long as the customer continues to pay their subscription. The headline-grabbing £4.99-a-month price point ('less than a fiver' we Brits would say) is "for any household that has a user engaged in educational activities (such as school, college, night classes etc)", and includes the 2007 versions of Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Business users pay £14.99. Both prices are before UK VAT (sales tax) of 17.5%, which most businesses reclaim but private individuals cannot.

Comcast: we’ll loose TV subs

The AB group has concluded a range of deals ahead of its launch of the low cost satellite platform Bis Television next week. The basic Bis package costs just E4.90 a month for 25 channels, with film and adult add-on options costing an extra E4.90 a month each.

AB has just concluded a deal with the Arabic platform ART to include its channels as a further option. Also, AB has concluded alliances with box manufacturers and the distribution channels to roll out a range of STBs with the Bis label and including a viewing card in the package, for E149. The viewing card gives ten days of free viewing, after which it must be validated by taking out a monthly subscription.

Alternatively, a tuner with a viewing card pre-paid for one year costs E199, or a one-year pre-paid card alone for E99.
