As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere

RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs.

The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks.

"These Web pages are tremendously popular," Mochalski said.

The services let users upload a file and then share a link, called a direct download link, in e-mails and Web forums for others to download the content.

Final release of Skype 2.7 for Mac brings Leopard stability

When it comes to companies keeping their Mac software on par with their Windows offerings, Skype (unlike Yahoo) has always done a pretty decent job. Skype for Mac 2.7 beta was a solid beta release that included address book integration, contact grouping, and a few other nifty features. It's been a while since the beta was released, though, so it should come as no surprise that the company finally made the update official by releasing Skype 2.7 for Mac this week.

If you've been using the beta releases, most of the features I mentioned above won't come as a surprise to you. However, since the August beta, Skype 2.7 has also gained a better-quality default resolution (640x480) for video and mobile indicators, as well as more volume adjustment options and a few contact group tweaks.

Ash-West superintendent warns selectmen budget override possible

The override would also restore and fully pay for several sports and activities that were either cut or required a fee, Zapantis said. The curriculum renewal cycle -- which reviews and improves school courses over a period of six years -- would also be included in the original override, Zapantis added.

Selectman Chairman John Fairbanks asked if the district's $785,000 excess and deficiency account -- which is made up of excess money not used during the fiscal year -- should pay for such programs instead of an override.

DRAKE BAY, Costa Rica, Dec. 14, 2005 -- Officials closed Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park, a prime tourist attraction, because many kinds of animals are dying in alarming numbers there amid one of the most sensitive ecosystems in the world.

The dead include monkeys, toucans and sloths. The last time monkeys started dying on such a massive scale in the park was in the 1950s, said Edwardo Carrillo, the head researcher in the investigative team that is looking into the deaths. The culprit then was yellow fever, he said. However, yellow fever does not affect birds.

Carillo said that perhaps as many as half the monkey population at the park (www.costaricamap.com/ing/biopcorcovado.html) has died.

Fairfield Inn coming to Milledgeville

A Middle Georgia development company plans to break ground on Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites next to Butler Ford on U.S. Highway 441 in the next several weeks. Fairfield Inn coming to Milledgeville Hotel could create 25 jobs, open in summer 2009 Alexander Cain The Union-Recorder A Middle Georgia development company plans to break ground on Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites next to Butler Ford on U.S. Highway 441 in the next several weeks.

In October, Milledgeville-based land surveying company Ogletree & Chivers surveyed 7.16 acres adjacent to Butler Ford for Warner Robins-based PeachState Hospitality.

The Milledgeville Planning & Zoning Department signed off on a plat for the property and it was filed with Baldwin County Feb. 13.

The survey opened the way for PeachState to draft architectural plans for the Fairfield Inn & Suites, which is expected to have 73 rooms and bring an additional 20 to 25 jobs to Milledgeville & Baldwin County, developer Harry Patel said.

Radio Talk

Find a new morning show elsewhere and have them take three to five years to become a big hit (or not). Or bring in a syndicated show like Rick & Bubba and hope it works immediately? (That didn't work with Bob & Tom or John Boy and Billy). Or just leave it as a "more music" show with no personality?

Here's the pool of potential local available (if not always compatible) talent: Steve Barnes, Jimmy Baron, Tim Rhodes, Southside Steve Rickman, Eric "Shark" from Dave FM, Gary "Wally" Wallace. Fin will be covering for now. I hear Tim Andrews (known on the show as Porn Czar) is out, too, I hear.

And I have a feeling Larry and Eric won't be sticking together. Then again, they said in 2004 they'd never work together again after the first dismissal. You have to wonder if either will be able to find a job in the Atlanta market again.
