Hope you get a kick out of this photo of little ole me with the towering Las Vegas star. The other guys are Jordi Vilasuso, who was on Guiding Light, and Paul Taylor, who was on As the World Turns.

What a lucky gal I was that night, right?

In other Mardi Gras news, earlier today Louisiana native Britney Spears surprised some Hurricane Katrina victims with a shopping trip. Then she spent some time hanging in the French Quarter.

Wow -- Brit actually almost looks camera ready.

Claims that a controversial by-pass route "disappeared off the agenda ...

Former transport minister Tavish Scott yesterday spoke of "outrageous mud-slinging", while leading LibDem donor Ian Suttie threatened legal action if anyone suggested he had acted improperly.

The row erupted after campaigners against the current Aberdeen by-pass plans produced evidence that Mr Scott had met a group called Pitfodels and Cults Conservation Group in October, 2005.

Plans to Raze NIU Shooting Site Debated

Nothing has been introduced yet," Sen. Brad Burzynski said. "What that will entail at this point in time will probably not be what the governor envisioned."

Rep. Robert Pritchard said he has received calls from alumni, students and community members.

"People think the governor reacted too quickly and that he's calling for a solution that hasn't thoroughly been discussed so that people can understand it ... to see if the solution matches the need," he said.

The key issue, he said, is figuring out how to meet the university's need for classroom space.

Puterbaugh, the newspaper editor, said university officials may be interested in the replacement building because of the chance to get money after years of limited aid from state government.

THE MOSSBERG SOLUTION

On a chilly day, most folks find it tough to open the front door to retrieve the newspaper -- much less climb a 15,000-foot mountain. But plenty of people court danger by rappelling down canyons and camping in remote woodlands. This week, I tested a device that will give thrill seekers a little extra insurance: It lets the folks back home track their progress, and learn when they're OK or when they're in trouble.

When activated, the $170 SPOT Satellite Messenger from SPOT Inc., the Milpitas, Calif., unit of Globalstar Inc., emits a signal to GPS satellites, which notify SPOT's messaging service. The service then sends a message to friends, family or emergency rescue teams about your current status. Because it uses GPS technology, the SPOT will work even when you're far from cellphone signal range and anywhere in the world.

Nike Invitational Day One

The evening session held room for just two distance events, but the Ladies managed to make history in one of those events. In the meet-opening swim, the 800-yard freestyle relay, a University of Kansas quartet set the Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium record with a time of 7:29.42. Kenyon's entry in the same event placed third with a time of 7:30.78, which was a new College record. The Ladies responsible for that time were Lauren Brady (Tyngsboro, MA/Phillips Exeter), Tina Ertel (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle), Rebecca Wenzlau (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Senior), and Danielle Arad (Yorba Linda, CA/Tarbut V'Torah). They erased the old Kenyon mark of 7:33.38 set at the 2004 Division III national championship meet. It went without saying that the time was also good for automatic qualification into this season's NCAA DIII Championship.

Wells fires free-kick winner

The game only got the go ahead an hour before kick off as morning rain had made the pitch very heavy but fortunately the wind got up and blew the worst of the showers away and the game went ahead.

Cambridge had fought a 2-2 draw at the Beveree earlier in the season but on this occasion never really got to grips with the conditions or the opposition.

Judge Mark Fuller - Asshole or diligent, obedient, and greedy foot ...

The above from a Harpers column last year. http://www.harpers.org/archive/2007/08/hbc-9000076...

Last Sunday, 60 Minutes broadcast its story on the travesty that is the Siegelman conviction. Just before and since, Karl Rove's personal fingerprints have been found to be on the whole mess. To put it bluntly, the top GOP leadership did everything and anything they could to stop a man who was popular enough to be elected (and possibly be a Rovian victim of election fraud) and suffer the consequences.

People like Judge Mark Fuller represent everything that is wrong with the US legal system. Funny, he is too twisted and obedient to recognize the damage he does.

To paraphrase Sir Douglas Adams, tongue in cheek, Mark Fuller and his criminal cabal will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.

Mark Brown's Grammy blog

Kanye West wins, but he should give the statue to pioneers Public Enemy for It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. In accepting, West happens to mention that he deserves to win the as-yet undecided album of the year Grammy.

8:43 p.m.: Aretha Franklin again shows how it's done, with the best vocals of the night and a stunning turn from trombone band Madison Bumble Bees.

8:56 p.m.: OK, a new incongruous moment of the night: country singer Dierks Bentley takes the stage with classic songwriter Carole King to give banjo legend Earl Scruggs a lifetime achievement award as they introduce Canadian singer Feist — all in about 40 seconds. Then Keely Smith sings That Old Black Magic with Kid Rock and Dave Koz. Is LSD making a comeback?

9:10 p.m.: Stevie Wonder introduces Alicia Keys, who redeems her earlier weak performance with a blistering No One, despite painful-looking silver glittery earrings one could use for a game of horseshoes.

Can Web-based Worlds Teach Us About the Real One?

Robert Bloomfield is tinkering with such a plan. As an accounting professor at Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y., he researches virtual worlds - a nascent, but growing, field in the social sciences.

His studies in economic policy lead him into digital realms where the laws of gravity don't apply. But what about the laws of supply and demand?

Immersive online worlds such as Second Life and World of Warcraft attract populations that outnumber Sweden's. And now, scientists are following players down the rabbit hole in hopes of learning more about the real world.

By tapping into the behavior of an estimated 73 million online gamers, Bloomfield and others hope to study the effects of public policy with an ease and specificity that only computers can deliver.

The Futureheads vs The Maccabees, part two

He was in control, he was like the leader wasn't he – without being a tosser about it, he was like ‘if you want to do something it's gotta come through me'. Or ‘you've got an idea for a song, let's hear it – no, I'm not gonna start mic'ing that one yet ‘cause it hasn't got a big hook'.
BH: They were awesome 12-, 13-hour days and then he'd bugger off to Greece at the weekend to play a trance festival or play bass with The Orb in front of 30,000 people. And we'd be on the beach eating sandwiches…
(laughter)
J: But you wouldn't pick what vocals were used would you, he'd pick them. That's quite important…
BH: He can hear it from a different perspective to me – listening back to your voice it's not nice. You kind of hate it, all the little habits and inflections you don't want them to be in there, but actually those are the things that give you the magic.
