Apple Files Five Major Touch Screen Patents
On February 21, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a powerful series of Touch screen related patent applications from Apple Inc. respectfully titled Touch Sensing Architecture, '>Typing with a Touch Sensor, Writing using a Touch Sensor, Touch Sensing through Hand Dissection and '>Contact Tracking and Identification Module for Touch Sensing. Although all five applications share a common patent abstract and summary, the patents do in fact present their unique distinctive presentations in the second half of each of these patents. All five applications share a common set of 55 patent figures with one that clearly illustrates a full computer touch screen based keyboard in the works. Apple's Abstract Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger and palm contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, multi-touch surface.
Bush responsible for fiscal mess
It would be harder to buy them off if they made some real money. Far too many industry leaders make more money in a day than they make all year. We will never know which of these multimillionaires has the presidents private phone number and can call at any time. A case could be made that because things happen quickly in the modern world that our industries need that kind of protection. But the case could be made that if we pay him more he might be more independent and get more sleep. When you read a story about a president stopping by Vietnam to pat the troops on the back and hand out a few medals, promising we will never let you down, it sounds great. http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,842924,00.html But the only way we can be certain of politicians loyalty to us would be to be sure that we are the ones paying them the big bucks.
Hooked on technology
She also loves using her digital still cameras and has several video cameras, from a DVD camcorder to outdated tape-based models. Clinical psychologist Roni Kabillo has treated several people who have had addictive relationships with computers and online games, some of whom have spent up to 16 hours a day playing online games such as World of Warcraft and RuneScape. "In the cases I'm familiar with, it's entirely to do with internet, interactive online games of a particular variety, where you have a character and you develop your character through various challenges," he says. Dr Kabillo says there is a fine line between healthy online game playing and internet addiction, but believes there are some clear signs of compulsive behaviour. "I think in this category addiction would be where you're really not exercising other forms of socialisation." Dr Kabillo has found that addiction to online gaming is more common among young men, particularly among those who are uncomfortable in social settings.
US seizes domain name of Spanish company selling Cuba trips
The United States has often presented itself as the guardian of Internet free speech. China may censor the Internet, and otherwise-civilized nations such as Germany or France may attempt to block what they view as unacceptable material, but the United States of America likes to think of itself as a place that doesn't censor people online... unless you happen to own a foreign travel business that offers trips to Cuba. Under such circumstances, as Steve Marshall discovered, all bets are off. Steve Marshall is a British citizen living in Spain. For the past decade, he has operated an online travel agency that specializes in selling trips to Cuba to various European nationals. Marshall operated a number of Cuban-specific web sites, including several that focused specifically on the literary and historical aspects of Cuba, and maintained them in English, French, and Spanish.
Wis. man gets life in wife's poisoning
Mark Jensen trembled slightly as he was told he will never leave prison for suffocating his wife after poisoning her with antifreeze. "I've come to the conclusion that if I were to impose anything less than the maximum sentence in this case, I'd feel I had cheated the other people because your crime is so enormous, so monstrous, so unspeakably cruel, that it overcomes all other considerations," Judge Bruce Schroeder said Wednesday. Jensen, 48, was found guilty last week of first-degree intentional homicide, a crime that carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. The judge could have stipulated that Jensen be eligible for parole. Schroeder decided against that option. Julie Jensen, 40, was found dead in her home in Pleasant Prairie on Dec.
Missionary food stories: Called — and served
Large corn or hominy, potatoes, carrots and a bit of grass (cut up like chives) is added. It is served as a soup, eaten with freshly baked bread and, of course, salsa. As a missionary I had a new "greenie" from South Jordan. We woke up that morning and went to our appointment, where patasca was being served. I gave him a taste from my bowl to see if he liked it. He said yes, so we asked for a bowl for him. After we left I asked him if he knew what he had just eaten. I told him what it was and that he shouldn't have any problem eating anything in the mission after that. Outlook Bleak for Joshua Trees
One of the questions I guess we talk about, at least internally, on an informal basis, is 'What do we have here without Joshua trees?'" says Joe Zarki, a longtime ranger. Joshua trees are a type of yucca that grow 30 feet or taller. The ends of their short branches are covered with clusters of green leaves with spiny tips. An early explorer named John Freemont called it the "most repulsive plant in the vegetable kingdom," Zarki says. "People nowadays, I think, look at it and see this really distinctive, sort of whimsical plant," Zarki says. "I like them. It's a plant with character." Jim Cornett, an independent ecologist who has been studying Joshua trees for almost 20 years, doesn't buy Ken Cole's grim prediction about the trees disappearing from the park.

Knox gains tourism revenue
Knox County draws more than $700 million from tourism each year, ranking it fourth among Tennessee counties, according to City of Knoxville officials. Steve Morse, an economist and director of UT's Tourism Institute, said revenue will be in the billions within 10 years. “Usually people in a college town think of fun things to do everywhere but a college town," Morse said. “Fun things to a college student is to go to the Strip, go to the Old City, go to football and sporting events, and that's about it. But there are a whole lot more things that are here in Knoxville." Statistics provided by Morse reveal that Knoxville's revenue from tourists has been steadily increasing by $42.5 million per year from 2002 to 2006. Erin Burns Freeman, director of communications for Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation, said the growth of the downtown area has enhanced the growth of the tourism revenue.
Today's News:
Pressure has been mounting on all parties as the Dallas Cowboys' Nov. 29 matchup with the Green Bay Packers approaches. The game will only be shown on the NFL Network. "I've had a lot more people contact me about NFL football the last two months instead of child protective services, windstorm insurance or worker's compensation, which are frankly more important issues," said Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale, R-Tomball. "I don't control what constituents call me about." The NFL Network wants to be placed on digital basic cable with all customers paying about 60 to 70 cents a month for it. Time Warner wants to offer the network on a surcharged sports tier available to subscribers who pay extra for it. The network has rejected Time Warner's offer to let the network charge a fee for the games that would be passed on to customers.
