Kathleen said she had no will, lawyer recalls

While she was divorcing Drew Peterson, Kathleen Savio said she didn't have a will, her former lawyer said Friday.

Attorney Harry Smith's statement raises new questions about a two-page, handwritten will that Drew Peterson unveiled 15 days after his ex-wife drowned in her bathtub in 2004.

Is indecency running rampant in our shopping malls?

Imagine that you're out with your teenage children and suddenly see a young woman walking nearby, completely topless except for one strategically-placed hand. Or some guys and girls run by, and one has clearly had his pants and underwear completely off - he's pulling them up, but you can see most of his backside. Or perhaps a half-dozen good-looking women strut by in nothing but underwear and high heels.

Many observers would be irritated or shocked; some might even be angry enough at the young woman to report her for indecent exposure. But while these incidents would violate any local statute for indecency or partial public nudity, most of us would probably shrug them off as a momentary or isolated incidents.

So why do we shrug it off when retailers take those same images, blow them up larger than life, and put them in hundreds of malls and teenage clothing stores around the country? The pictures currently in the windows of Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret contain the exact images described above, and would violate public indecency standards in person.

Children's tours span from art exhibit to library checkout

Noontime at the Missoula Public Library won't mean a lunch break for our Youth Services librarians, not for the next three months anyway. The library is once again hosting tours for every fifth-grade class in Missoula as part of our annual partnership with the Missoula Art Museum. The students begin their journey at the museum, where this year they are being treated to an exhibit by David Shaner, one of Montana's great ceramic artists. They have a chance to create some hands-on artwork before walking the few blocks to the library for a selection of books related to ceramics and a tour of the library's collection."Our hope is that by targeting one grade over a period of many years every public school student in Missoula County will have been to the library at least once," says children's librarian Karen Gonzales.

Google to expand child care in Baylands

Architects for Google presented plans for a daycare facility for 250 children alongside Palo Alto's Baylands to the Architectural Review Board Thursday.

The site at 1129 San Antonio Ave. lies just across the street from another Google daycare facility for 80 children under construction at 3801 E. Bayshore Road. Google offices are also nearby in Mountain View.

The board's preliminary review required no vote, but members said they liked the plans despite concerns about parking.

The proposal calls for tearing down three existing office buildings susceptible to flooding because they lie below a federally required eight-foot mark and replacing them with a one-story row of classrooms and play spaces.

The buildings, bordered by salt marshes and a utility yard, would measure about 46,500 square feet, project manager David Blitz of the Staubach Company said.

The kinder, gentler energy superpower

In the face of US demand for Canadian oil, the greatest challenge we face is maintaining our sovereignty and democracy. Already that demand has dictated for us Canadian policy on greenhouse gas emissions and the SPP (which is principally about securing energy security and prosperity for the US). The Canadian electorate's opinion is simply bypassed and the important long-term decisions on the future of our country are made behind closed doors by unelected elites.

For example, it was a Jan. 2006 meeting in Houston, Texas, kept secret from the Canadian public for over a year before Radio Canada got a hold of the minutes, that called for a "fivefold expansion" in oilsands production in a relatively "short time span" and encouraged decision-makers "to streamline the regulatory approval process" with a "one-stop-shop" for project proposals to facilitate that expansion.

NCS holds songwriter coffee shop show as benefit

In 2001, Smith celebrated three more hit songs. In the U.S., "There Is No Arizona," performed by newcomer Jamie O'Neal and co-written with O'Neal and Lisa Drew, reached No. 1 in February and picked up a Grammy nomination for Country Song of the Year.

Other writers are tentatively scheduled to appear along with a special surprise guest.
