Polls show a dead-heat, and Romney's campaign is weighing whether to begin running negative ads against Huckabee. Fred Thompson, the former Tennessee senator, also is trying to compete in Iowa; he's not a factor in New Hampshire. Should Romney win Iowa's caucuses on Jan. 3, he'd come into New Hampshire in a commanding position and with a strong ground-game; Huckabee's candidacy could be over. But were Romney to lose in Iowa, GOP strategists say he would be wounded but still able to compete in next-up New Hampshire on Jan. 8 because of the foundation he's laid. If Huckabee triumphs in Iowa, these strategists say, it's unclear whether he can leverage that success into financial and organizational strength in the narrow window between Iowa and New Hampshire.

MAU looking for families to host students
BENNINGTON Mount Anthony Union High School is hosting the New England Music Festival, but with the show two weeksaway, about 180 students still need a place to stay, the school's principal said Tuesday. MAUHS is responsible for housing the 487 high school participants, said Christina Gabrus, the school's office manager, and is still in desperate need of volunteers willing to house the young musicians and choir singers during the three-day festival. Gabrus said the high school was supposed to send out rooming assignments this weekend, but due to the lack of volunteers, this will likely be delayed. She said volunteers would be responsible for picking up students at 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, after they are done practicing, driving them to practice at the high school at about 8 a.m.

The raids happened as there had been intelligence that a cell of British Islamists had planned to kidnap and behead a Muslim soldier. A particular Muslim soldier had already been targeted, and was under protection. It was revealed shortly after the arrests that he was a corporal in military intelligence, chosen from a shortlist of 25 individuals Adam Mussa justified his hostility to the Birmingham raids by ridiculing the notion of such a plot.
Two-second machine delay has no effect on video play
I've received some good reader questions this month, starting with one about an aspect of slot-machine play that's often misinterpreted as a "signal." While playing video poker, every now and then the machine will "stall" before dealing the next hand. Any idea what is really going on? Bruce C. It's something that occurs not only with video poker but spinning-reel and video slots, as well. According to the engineers at International Game Technology (IGT), the periodic two-second delay occurs when the machine's internal electronic meters are being updated. The meters have no connection with the machine's random number generator and therefore have no bearing on the course of play. Proposals for an energy from waste plant are being prepared for a site at Midpoint 18 in Middlewich - just five miles away from a proposed site in Lostock Gralam. Cheshire residents are also fighting proposals for incinerators at Weston Point, in Runcorn, and Ince Marshes. .
