Senior Labour figures claim ‘line was crossed’ in criticism of ...

Some guests have claimed that they attended thinking it was an event to establish bridges between government and business, and were unaware that proceeds from the dinner would fund the local Labour Party.

When the row broke last week, Labour gave conflicting accounts of the nature of the SIF. Foulkes said that the forum was "never billed as politically neutral". A Labour spokesman said the forum was separate from the party.

However, last night Robertson, a former UK defence secretary, claimed the organisation was "explicitly and unashamedly" set up by the party and "did not pretend to be anything else".

He added: "The Scottish Industry Forum was similar to the Conservative Party's Focus on Scotland dinners, which raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Tory coffers, and also like the SNP's Business for Scotland organisation.

Failing the Lohan Test

They probably tell the bill's opponents that they are faking when they say they're faking their opposition. At some point the search for authenticity in state-of-the-art politicians becomes fruitless. A fake "no" vote counts as much as a heartfelt "no" vote. ... 12:01 P.M.

Paranoid's Corner II: I'm now so obsessed with the Senate "p.o.s." immigration bill that I think all the news the Bush administration is making--from the President's unusual press conference to his statements on Iran and Iraq to the release of that Osama-Zawahiri message--isn't really designed to influence the public's views on Iran and Iraq or Al Qaeda. It isn't designed to directly influence the public on anything. It's designed to take up media space over Memorial Day so there's less room for angry opposition to the President's immigration bill! It's so obvious....

County running club thriving

Winter generally puts a damper on the running calendar, but the 2008 Xtreme Running Film Series got started on a snowy evening in February with Dancing the Bear, a film about two women at the Bear 100 Mile Endurance Run.

"I think it was an interesting and in some ways unique opportunity for runners to chat other than in a racing or training setting," said organizer Mike Casper.

The next film in the series, on March 19, is Without Limits, which tells the story of American running legend Steve Prefontaine.

Appalachian Outdoors is hosting the series at 123 S. Allen St., in State College. Viewers meet at the store at 7:50 p.m. and the film starts at 8 p.m.

The Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 and the Nittany Valley Running Club are sponsoring the series, which is scheduled to run through June.

Is Executive Hubris Ruining Companies?

The iPod experience highlights how world-class innovators are always going to have technical experts who know how to find, as well as develop, innovations. By contrast, the 'not invented here syndrome' with its premise that in-house innovations will trump outside ones, is a hallmark of hubris.

It's also easy to overlook how hubris can interfere with efficient manufacturing. Take the Segway, Dean Kamen's self balancing, two wheel scooter that riders operate while standing. With all the hype, Kamen built a 75,000 square foot manufacturing facility in New Hampshire that is setup to produce at least 40,000 units a month. This was based on his estimate that the firm could capture 0.1% of the global population of 6 billion people and sell 6 million Segways each year. Weeks later, the Segway was forced into an embarrassing recall of its entire installed base of 23,500 scooters.

People Karl Rove

This was written just before the Super Bowl and Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008

Thursday, December 20:

Walter C. Uhler: Truth, Lies, Errors and Bullshit About Iraq and Iran (3 comments) The thought provoking book, On Bullshit, by Professor Emeritus Harry G. Frankfurt provides a perspective from which to evaluate bullshit flung by the Bush administration, the neocons and the mainstream media.

Saturday, November 10:

Cindy Sheehan: A New Direction to Disaster (5 comments) A response to Karl Rove's Wall Street Journal Op-ed and the Dem Congress' Iraq policy; In Karl's diatribe against the failed 110th Congress he makes all kinds of misleading and scurrilous claims about Congress. I NEVER thought I would agree with the Master of Sleaze about anything, but taking no joy in my agreement or conclusions, I do agree that the 110th is pretty pitiful, but for obvious different reasons.

Louis Walsh's opinion on X Factor-based drama Rock Rivals as it's ...

Does that description ring any bells?

Louis Says: "Not very well acted. If he is modelled on Simon Cowell, there is a problem."

Scandal is a turn off for ITV

By Mark Jefferies

Rock Rivals is part of ITV's bid to claw back some cash in the wake of the phone-in scandals.

The station lost £58million last year as a lack of revenue from premium-rate competitions contributed to a 35 per cent slide in pre-tax profits. It reported profits of £188m - £100m down on 2006.

The company said revenues from premium-rate services (PRS), including the discontinued ITV Play channel, were down by £58m.

The figures also illustrate a huge drop in calls to phone-vote shows such as I'm A Celebrity..., which are suffering as a result of the channel's tarnished reputation.

Attorney General under President George W. Bush, and conservative state Supreme Court Justice Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr., cousin of prominent right-wing radio commentator Rush Limbaugh.

Political opposition and loss of funding killed the program in Massachusetts, which was initially successful in the early 1970s.

National experts on juvenile crime urge states to invest in this type of counseling and rehabilitation, instead of confinement and punishment, as a way to stem adult crime and incarcerations. But for the last 20 years, most states have gone in the opposite direction, said Liz Ryan, director of the Campaign for Youth Justice.

A series of high-profile youth crimes in the mid-1980s spurred most states to adopt tough juvenile crime laws, which resulted in overcrowded corrections facilities, scandals over abusive and punitive treatment and corrections budgets that often surpassed the cost of public education, Ryan said.
