Imagine a state-of-the-art environmental, cultural and entertainment center on the shores of Lake Red Rock, a place to spend a day or a week, with a focus on the Des Moines River watershed. That is the hope of a consortium of educators, conservationists and state and federal agencies, and the groups have been staging a series of informational meetings to unveil their plans. One such presentation was held at the Newton DMACC campus on Wednesday morning. The Cordova Center, an estimated $50 million project along the northern shores of Lake Red Rock, would create an interactive, multi-use learning center near the park's existing observation tower, as well as an outdoor amphitheater, additional cabins, a larger picnic area and an extension to the lake's Volksweg Trail. The partners, including the Marion County Conservation Board, U.S.
Hockey wives and abortion
They have cute websites designed to appeal to teenage girls, lots of advice about boys — giggle — and sites on MySpace. They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion. Planned Parenthood told me it frequently talks to women who went to these apparently welcoming places for counselling on the three options — abortion, adoption and parenting. The group says women report feeling badly treated. Charity's rewards The problem is worse than just some hockey fans inadvertently donating to a cause they may oppose — that is a personal issue between a fan and her team (in my case, the Canadiens). What irks is that our tax dollars are involved. The raffle money is channelled through the Sens Foundation, the team's registered charity arm, which is matching every dollar raised by The Better Halves.
Conster Nation
STON, S.C. -- Ken Lay died last week. Huzzah. Huzzah. There are some dead who don't deserve respect. If I had a chariot I'd tie his lifeless corpse to the back and drag him through the streets of Houston - slowly enough to let every one of his former employees spit on him - before towing his worthless carcass to the middle of what was Enron Field where he'd fry on a pyre of worthless stock certificates. And that would be too good for him. I wanted him to rot in prison for thirty years. I wanted him to live a life far worse than the life he forced on thousands of his employees; decent hardworking folks whom he stuck with shares of a company that was as hollow as he was immoral, shares that he forced them to keep even as he dumped his and made millions.

Kickels, Oster win sectional title matches
Kickels took a 1-0 lead over Gonzalez with a second-period escape. That lead held up until the third quarter when Gonzalez tied it with a reverse. The match remained knotted in the overtime before both wrestlers were awarded points because of unsportsmanlike conduct during the first 30-second tiebreaker. With Gonzalez (21-2) on top to begin the second 30-second tiebreaker, Kickels produced a reverse at the 21-second mark and made it stand up. It was on to the state for Kickels, who was the Indians' middle linebacker. "What a feeling this is," said Kickels, who finished fourth in the state last year. "It's awesome. That's the only way I can describe it. "Gonzalez is a tremendous wrestler. I knew this match was going to be among the toughest I've had all season. "This was a match you had to be ready to go from the very start.
As far as Will Ferrell films go, 'Semi-Pro' is minor league
Say hello again to the magnificent, cheesy, infamous and long-gone Virginia Squires. It was the local professional basketball team of the 1970s, the one with the worst winning percentage in American Basketball Association history. So why bring up that rarest of things, a local professional sports team? The new movie "Semi-Pro," which opens today, is the culprit. Shameless buffoon Will Ferrell stars as a pop singer who owns, coaches and plays on a small-market team as the ABA nears extinction. Indeed, as shown in the movie, the ABA did come to an end in 1976, allowing four of its teams to merge into the NBA. The Virginia Squires was not in that final four. In the movie, the struggling team at the center of things is the Flint Tropics, a fictitious outfit centered in Flint, Mich., where Ferrell's character, Jackie Moon, is as famous as Henry Ford.
Viewer Comments On Gun Control
Because the State of Illinois in its infinite wisdom has denied me the right to carry a firearm to protect myself, I might be killed. Not a situation I would wish on ANYONE. Thank you for asking for opinions on gun control. Sincerely, Jeff Clauss, ChicagoHow many more wake up calls do we need until law makers realize that some new, strict gun control laws need to be passed? How about a much longer waiting period? One, two, maybe even three months? How about a limit on the number of guns a person can have, say, two? How about more detailed background checks? If you've ever been admitted into a mental hospital, suffer from depression, ever been charged with assault, etc. then no guns for you, period. How about anybody found with a gun that isn't registered to them automatically serves a day or two or a week in jail along with a massive fine? Maybe make them as expensive as a car? Make certain guns cost $10,000 dollars and the bullets cost a premium as well.
