| Storm worm continues its rampage
The body of the message contains a text link leading to a web page advertising an online 'greeting card' supposedly sent to the user. On clicking either the image or the link, the user downloads an executable file that installs the Storm malware. Infected machines are then connected to a customised peer-to-peer network which is used to control the botnet and install new versions of the worm. This malware connects the user to Storm's huge botnet, which has been linked to spam runs and phishing attacks, and is said to be among the greatest threats on the internet. As Storm's run nears 14 months, security companies are stepping up their efforts to slow the worm. ThreatStop has made its normally private list of blocked Storm domains available to the general public, allowing users to copy the list and use it with firewall software to block traffic from known Storm distributors.
Winds shifting in the debate over education
Listening to Jones testify on HB 881, I am suddenly aware that, indeed, the center of gravity on the education debate has shifted. No longer are we stuck on inputs and debate about how one government can best grow another, which the input set chooses to define as "local control." "It is a unique opportunity," Jones says of her bill establishing a state commission to grant charters, along with a fairer funding model. "This enhances local control by letting the consumer decide. To narrowly define local control [as] government monoply control does a disservice to Georgia." And to children who either drop out or struggle through bad schools that show no promise of improving. NMSU men's basketball team entertains Hawaii
Saturday's game is big," said NMSU senior forward Justin Hawkins after the Aggies' 88-65 victory over San Jose State on Thursday. "It's senior night, but we are also playing a team that beat us. We have to play well, we want to head into the WAC Tournament with momentum." Hawkins came to Las Cruces from the University of Utah. Peete transferred from Kansas State. Senior center Martin Iti transferred from North Carolina-Charlotte and senior forward Trei Steward came from the University of Northern Colorado. "When you start the organization of senior night, you start to realize that these guys were pretty good for me," said Aggies head coach Marvin Menzies. "These guys all understand that it's all about winning. That was good to have a group like that. I think we are going to have great relationships." As they sat out in 2005-06, the Aggies' practice squad could have competed with some WAC opponents.
Bad blends: biofuel labeling often inaccurate
Biofuel blends may not always be what the label claims. A study at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found that many smaller distributors could be "splash blending." While sampling blended biodiesel fuels purchased from small-scale retailers, researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found that many of the blends do not contain the advertised amount of biofuel. Marine chemist Chris Reddy and colleagues sampled pure biodiesel and blends from more than a dozen distributors across the United States. When testing fuels listed as 20 percent biodiesel (commonly known as B20), they found that the actual percentage of biofuel ranged from as little as 10 percent to as much as 74 percent. Only 10 percent of samples met the specifications for biofuel blends required for vehicles of the U.S.
Hart's hoax leaves mark on society
Ever did a quick Yahoo! search for recruiting sites? If so, it probably wasn't so quick after all because they are so many to choose from. Recruiting is no longer reserved for the periods leading up to signing day. It's become a 365-days-a-year business, where some guy sitting behind a keyboard in the middle of nowhere is so obsessed with where the next Johnny Come Lately is bound for that he will do anything - (ITALICS) anything (ITALICS END) - to beat the competition. Message boards and chat rooms eat the latest gossip up. Some of the most viewed stories on the Web last week involved (what else?) recruiting. Sports are no longer about teaching youth the core values, such a sportsmanship and teamwork. The days when they were just about having some fun after school vanished years ago.
TheStar.com | Sports | Grey Cup arrives at city hall
On hand to greet the Cup were a dozen fans, four times as many media and city hall's feral squirrels, which practically crawl up your leg in search of food. Amidst the fear, one was reminded of the words of Steve Coogan, "If it's between me and a crack squirrel, I will take that squirrel down. I will take that squirrel down to Chinatown." After being marched into council chambers by an honour guard, Mayor David Miller took over. The city's first citizen relived his fondest CFL moments and almost managed to make them seem unscripted. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon the praised the city's love for "Canada's national game." In his defence, he was born in Chicago. But in his offence, I was born in Toronto and I don't think America's national pastime is hockey. After that, Miller officially proclaimed this Grey Cup Week, which excited those fans to fits of shouting 'Go (Insert Winnipeg Blue Bombers or Saskatchewan Roughriders here)!' But when Miller finished his remarks with 'Go Riders,' the mood soured slightly.
Tax Rebates Offer Opportunity to Clean Out Bad Habits
Taking the time to identify your current life state can help in this first step. If you are just starting out, you may have student loans and are adjusting to living on your own. If you are thinking about your children's future, you may be investing in a savings plan for college. The values you outline will lead you to your priorities in life. And your priorities can be shaped into specific goals. "Outlining the financial goals that are important to you only increases your chances of achieving them," Spiker said. "Most Americans will just spend the tax rebates instead of contemplating where the additional money fits into the bigger financial picture. Just like you clean out your closet, this tax rebate gives Americans an opportunity to put those bad spending habits behind them and start fresh." Take the tax refund as an example.
Atty: Drop Mass. Teen's Murder Charge
Thursday, March 6, 2008. Shapiro asked a judge to throw out the murder charge against his client, arguing prosecutors improperly told the grand jury that it should not consider the student's mental disabilities. Israel kills 20 in Gaza
The latest spike began Wednesday, when five Iranian-trained Hamas militants, including two rocket masterminds, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza. In retaliation, Hamas fired dozens of Gaza-produced Qassam rockets, as well as longer-range Iranian-made Grad rockets smuggled in via Egypt. Several Grad rockets slammed into Ashkelon, 11 miles north of Gaza, on Thursday, including one that hit an apartment building, slicing through the roof and three floors below, and another that landed near a school, wounding a 17-year-old girl. .

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
That's exactly why the CDA Press will never break stories like these. They will never invest in giving their reporters the support and resources to do investigative stories. But they'll pick yours up on the AP, and you can take that to the bank. (DFO: Bingo) *Editor Steve Smith told me a few minutes ago that our pursuit of the e-mails between Prosecutor Bill Douglas and Marina Kalani has cost the newspaper about $20,000 to date -- and we'll probably spend that much in the next coupla weeks pursuing the latest e-mail scandal in the prosecutor's office. *Bayview Herb called to say his Internet access is down, too. Has the Kootenai County commissioners office ordered Time Warner to quit providing access to Huckleberries Online? Just kidding. I think. *Huckleberries hears ...
Malware writers exploring Software as a Service model
The business of writing, buying, and selling malware has become increasingly commercial over the past few years, but a new report from online security firm Finjan sheds light on just how mainstream the crimeware business has gone. Earlier this month, the company discovered a small, standalone application gathering data on over 8,700 servers, including web sites from 2,500 North American companies and a handful of sites in Alexa's top 100 ranking. Potential buyers were able to log into the malicious server hosting the data-gathering service and evaluate any given web site's size and Google Page Rank to decide whether or not the site's FTP information was worth purchasing or not. The concept of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is nothing new, but this is the first time anyone has organized the purchase of FTP login credentials, with additional tools available to help a buyer confirm he's making a smart purchase.
