San Bruno man founds Church of Reality

SAN BRUNO — Seconds after Marc Perkel's mind had shifted into a higher state of thinking, he had a revelation: The Church of Reality.

Perkel was relaxing alone at home nine years ago when the light bulb went on.

"I was smoking a little weed, and I was thinking about religion," said the now 52-year-old realist. "The name kind of popped in my head. But I had a hard time grasping the idea that no one (had) thought about it. Quite frankly, that aspect (has) never gone away."

The next morning, The Church of Reality was born.

"If it's real, we believe in it," said Perkel, who is self-employed and works in Web hosting and spam filtering. "Anything true will stand up to scrutiny. We're not a faith-based religion. We're doubt-based. The Church of Reality is a new kind of religion."

The American Religious Identification Survey, performed in 2001 by the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, found that the non-believer population at that time comprised roughly 14 percent of Americans.

MaximumASP Development Team Highlighted in Microsoft's Heroes Happen ...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - (Business Wire) MaximumASP, a Microsoft Gold Certified Provider of web hosting and managed IT services, is featured in the Microsoft Heroes Happen Here Portrait Book for their significant impact in bringing new technologies to market.

"MaximumASP's participation in the 2008 Global Launch Wave is another example of our tight knit relationship with Microsoft," said Chris Morrow, CIO at MaximumASP. "As with previous Microsoft web-related technologies, we will continue to be early adopters, whether that is testing and offering a new product like IIS 7 or SQL Server 2008 in its beta stage, or helping launch a new product to the public as we are now doing with Windows Server 2008."

MaximumASP has immediate availability of all four of the new Windows Server 2008 Editions as options in its dedicated server product line-up.

Response to InfoWorld’s Choices on 2007’s Top Technology

First of all, I must note for the record that InfoWorld has never given me an award as being top in any category. I'm thankful that they've spared their readers that pain. Now that I've gotten that over with, I'd like to comment on an article I recently read over at InfoWorld.

David Marshall, a well known comentator on the virtualization arena and quite an interesting person, comments on his choices of the best technology from 2007. Although several fine products are mentioned, they seem to be the obvious choices because they offered technology that certainly was good enough to statisfy the needs of many organizations and were both highly and successfully publicized by their developers.

What about the technology that was less highly publicized but, very interesting nevertheless? I suspect that the products that were easiest to defend were selected due to the limited space allowed for such discussions.

Justin Smith is 6-4, weighs 282 pounds and will be 28 on Sept. 30. Both players are seven-year veterans of the NFL. Last year, Douglas made 72 tackles, three sacks and 12 stuffs, which are tackles for losses. Smith had 78 tackles, two sacks and two stuffs.

Both are hard-working players who have leadership skills. .

Cary private equity fund pours money into film and TV projects

While the Triangle is hardly Tinseltown, local residents are throwing a surprisingly respectable amount of money at film and TV entertainment projects. One such investor is 43-year-old Dale Scales, co-managing director of a small private equity fund put together by Cary's OBX Capital Group, whose other managing director is Reed Clevenger.

Scales' fund totals $33 million and invests in a variety of ventures, from technology to manufacturing to entertainment. One project is "Bar Starz," a $9 million film that's fully funded by OBX Capital and is co-produced by Scales and his company.

HANNA: A CITY'S HAVEN

You'd also have 20 miles of trails that wind through one of the largest pieces of true Coastal Hardwood Hammock left on the Southeastern coast. Why not throw in a 60-acre freshwater lake where speckled perch bite year-round and 10-pound largemouth bass get caught by kids?

While you're wishing, add over 100 species of seasonally indigenous birds, including the white pelican, belted kingfisher and sharp-skinned hawks. Don't forget possums, raccoons, armadillos, squirrels, marsh rabbits and an elusive bobcat or two.

The truth is you do own the parcel of land described above if you live in the City of Jacksonville. It's Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, owned and operated by the city. And as taxpayers and residents, it's yours.

It was the fishing that called me to Hanna Park. The name has come up almost weekly, while writing fishing reports or forecasts for the newspaper.
