Glendive hosts three on three tourney
The Glendive Recreation Department will be hosting a three on three half court basketball tournament.Divisions will be fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades with an entry fee of $75 per team. The boys three on three tournament is scheduled for Dec. 29. Registration deadline for this tournament is Dec. 21.The girls three on three tournament is scheduled for Jan. 26, 2008. Profile: Palo Altans for Government Effectiveness
Civic engagement didn't just pop onto the city's 2008 priority list. Since 2003, a group known as PAGE (Palo Altans for Government Effectiveness) -- created by current Mayor Larry Klein, architect John Northway and a core of other well-known locals -- has been working to promote respectful involvement with local government. The group emerged during a rancorous period in Palo Alto's political history, motivated by a divisiveness that had overcome civil civic processes, Klein and Northway said at the time. The group founders believed that effective engagement and dialogue would help the community address critical issues. In addition, PAGE has espoused a particular interest in involving and respecting staff members of local public agencies. In 2004, through a series of community meetings, the group developed a list of 13 "Guiding Principles for Palo Alto." Available as an appendix on PAGE's Web site, the principles include: "Be willing to compromise," "Build relationships ..." and "Once a solution is reached, support it and move on." In the spring of 2007, PAGE released the paper, "Building Civic Engagement and Social Capital in Palo Alto: Making a Good Community Better." It hosted two forums that spring on community building and interacting with the government.

It started up a year ago when a group of activists, fresh off their election victory over Measure L, decided that the community needed an Internet base for sharing information. After consulting with several media and technology experts, including Pacifican Larry Rosenstein and Coastsider.com's Barry Parr, we chose Six Apart's Typepad blogging software, which is easy, intuitive, and relatively cheap for a bunch of amateurs to use. Riptide welcomes contributions of "hot stories, cool pix, and cold cash to keep us afloat," according to the site. Friends learn to ride motorbikes for epic 7,000-mile trip
THREE former Worcester students have been learning to ride motorbikes ready for a 7,000 mile journey across Europe. Mike Finlay, Sarah Lonbay and Flick Copp, who all attended King's School, Worcester, will be joined by friend Mikey Mansergh for the epic trip later this year. They will travel 7,631 miles across 26 countries and 30 borders. .
